Target students: Graduate students (MSW or PhD students)

 

Objectives:

 This course is designed to enable social work students to design and carry out research, including conceptualization and operationalization; measurement; sampling; data analysis, writing proposals and journal publications. It helps students develop a critical understanding of empirical research and the skills necessary to read and understand empirical research articles. It will be focused on developing the knowledge and skills to write a successful research proposal, including a thesis or dissertation proposal and a research grant application. For students who are ready to write manuscript, emphasis will be placed on the strategies of publication in academic journals.

  • Value of a study
  • Strategies in conducting literature review
  • Conceptualization and operationalization
  • Methodology: measurement; sampling; data analysis
  • Research ethics & integrity
  • Writing research/grant proposals
  • Journal publication strategies

 

Assessment:  

1.  Participation (20%)

Coming to class & labs prepared and participating in meaningful and relevant discussion

 

2. Presentation (30%)

Each student will present on research proposal or manuscript.

3.  Take Home Final Exam (Essay) (50%)

Option 1: A research proposal

Option 2: A manuscript for academic journal

 

Deadline of submission: 10 July 2018

All papers (in word document format) should be submitted to Prof. Edward Chan via email .

 

Submission guideline:

All papers should have proper formatting and citation.

Comprehensive literature review is required.

Proper citation and reference format is required. The style and punctuation of the references should conform strictly to APA style (2010) Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Edition)]. Marks will be deducted for improper format.

A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the paper, student’s name, student ID. and date of submission.
